We are here to produce.
There are ideas in our group chats, in our notebooks, in the conversations we keep returning to. A book. A tool. A service. A gift. Something that could help someone, delight someone, save someone time. We want to give those ideas a shape, a name and a way into the world. A finished product gives that idea a chance to earn. We want more of us making our own goods and selling them.
Learning must lead somewhere.
Start with what you want to make. Learn the part that moves it forward. Try it, ask questions, make mistakes, come back with a better version. You can begin with the knowledge you have today. Our purpose is to help turn curiosity into capability, and capability into work you can put in front of a customer. Every attempt should leave you able to do a little more for yourself.
Use the tools. Bring your judgement.
AI can help us sketch, code, design, write and explore. We still decide what deserves to exist, what feels like us and whether the result is good enough. Learn to question an answer, check a build and improve a design. Our taste, our experience and our understanding of people belong in the work. The tools should help us act on those things.
Make something worth paying for.
Think about the person on the other side of the sale. What do they need? What will they receive? How will you deliver it well? Test the product, explain it clearly and price it with care. Selling is a skill we intend to practise openly: the offer, the shop, the conversation, the follow-through. Taking money for our work comes with the responsibility to give people something of value.
Keep a stake in what you build.
Understand the rights, the accounts, the costs and the choices behind your product. Keep your work organised. Know where your files live and how your business reaches its customers. Ownership gives you a say in the next version and a foundation you can keep building on. We want the value created by our imagination and our effort to have a place in our own lives.
Let the knowledge travel.
A useful answer can move someone else's project forward. Share what helped. Give honest feedback. Respect another person's idea and ask before passing their work on. There is room here for the first attempt and the experienced builder, for different skills and different ambitions. When more Black people have the means to produce, we gain more choices about what we make, how we earn and what we pass on.
